One of our recent projects perfectly showcases what’s possible when thoughtful design meets high-quality craftsmanship. A customer with a sharp eye for fashion and an appreciation for quality came to us with a clear creative vision. Petite with a small waist, she wanted a pair of custom blue jeans that offered a full, blossoming silhouette—loose through the thighs with a wide, flared leg opening. It was a bold style choice, rooted in personal expression and a desire to own something truly unique.
While this kind of wide-leg flare is often achieved with standard denim, she didn’t want ordinary. She requested 14 oz. Japanese selvedge denim, a fabric known for its strength, structure, and clean selvedge edge. The challenge? Selvedge denim is woven straight at the outseam, making it difficult to shape into dramatic curves without distorting the fit. But after four rounds of sample fittings, we fine-tuned the pattern to achieve exactly what she envisioned: an elegant, flowing flare that honored the properties of the fabric while sculpting the perfect shape.
To preserve the fresh, dark appearance of raw denim but eliminate shrinkage, we prewashed the fabric. The result is a jean that feels substantial and broken-in but still retains that crisp, deep indigo finish. For stitching, the customer selected a golden brown thread, delivering the timeless look of traditional blue jeans but with a softer, low-contrast finish that lets the silhouette shine. Copper metal rivets and shanks reinforce the design, while a classic button-fly closure adds vintage character and promotes natural creasing between the buttons, resulting in horizontal whisker fades at the front hips—distinct from the vertical fade patterns often formed by a zipper-fly.
As with all of our custom pieces, we finished the inside with our signature hand-drawn pocket bags, made from heavyweight twill and personalized with the customer’s name and the date her jeans were completed. It’s a meaningful, built-in reminder that her jeans weren’t made on an assembly line—they were made specifically for her.
She loved the final result—and immediately started planning additional pairs in new fabrics, including white denim.
