Tailoring a Levi’s Color Block Jacket for a Perfect Fit

At Williamsburg Garment Company, we recently completed some great denim jacket alterations on a women’s Levi’s denim jacket with a unique color block design. The jacket came from a customer who loved how it fit through the chest but was frustrated by how boxy it felt around the waist—and how long the sleeves hung past her hands. Like many women who struggle with off-the-rack fits, she needed a few professional tweaks to make her Levi’s color-block jacket truly hers.

To refine the fit without disrupting the original design elements—especially the side hand pockets—we executed the body tapering from the waistband's center back and side seams of the jacket. The technique allowed us to preserve the integrity of the front silhouette while tailoring the overall shape. We took out 3 inches from each side at the hem, reducing the total circumference by 6 inches. To keep the natural flow of the jacket and maintain mobility, we eased out the alteration as we approached the armholes.

The sleeves were also professionally shortened by 1¾ inches. We preserved the original flat-felled seam construction and recreated the double-needle chainstitch finish—just like Levi’s did in the original factory production. The photo of the inside sleeve, along with the trimmed fabric cutaways, offers a clear look at our precision. You’ll be hard-pressed to find tailoring—yes, even in a brand’s own repair shops—that matches our level of reconstruction, quality, and attention to detail in denim clothing.

Tailoring a Levi’s denim jacket like this one requires more than your average sewing machine. We used an off-the-arm double-needle chainstitching machine, a rare piece of equipment typically found in denim production factories or specialty workshops like ours. It’s this kind of dedication to authenticity and craft that sets Williamsburg Garment Company apart.

Whether you need to tailor a men's or women’s Levi’s denim jacket or customize something as distinctive as this contrast color-blocked jacket, our shop delivers professional, factory-quality results with an expert's touch.
